Animal Health

Orion is developing new products for the treatment of pain, cancer and cardiovascular diseases in animals. Animal health drug development utilizes the deep knowledge of our own therapy areas and formulation technology as well as our human drug and formulation innovations when developing new therapies for animals.

Orion’s first proprietary molecules to reach the market were animal sedatives Domosedan, Domitor, Dexdomitor and their antagonist Antisedan. The function of these molecules is based on alpha-2 receptor pharmacology.

The newest product to come to the market is Domosedan gel. It is the first prescription sedative for horses that is possible to be given to the owner to administer. Detomidine is absorbed through the mucous membrane as the gel is dosed under the tongue. Domosedan gel is indicated for sedation to facilitate restraint for non-invasive veterinary procedures (e.g. passage of naso-gastric tube, radiography, rasping teeth) and minor husbandry procedures (e.g. clipping, shoeing).
